Charles "Chuck" Bowman and John Horan were both funeral directors at Horan & McConaty Funeral Home on April 20, 1999, when two assailants killed thirteen people at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado. Jennifer McBride was Director of Grief Support and Community Education at the same funeral home. John, Chuck, Jennifer and their coworkers at the funeral home were called upon to help seven of the families say goodbye to their loved ones in the days that followed.

Victims of the Columbine shooting include Cassie Bernall, 17; Steven Curnow, 14; Corey DePooter, 17; Kelly Fleming, 16; Matthew Kechter, 16; Daniel Mauser, 15; Daniel Rohrbough, 15; William "Dave" Sanders, 47; Rachel Scott, 17; Isaiah Shoels, 18; John Tomlin, 16; Lauren Townsend, 18, and Kyle Velasquez, 16.
